Somebody took a poll one time and asked people what one thing
about their computer could they not live without? The #1 answer was "email".
Email has quickly become a regular part of our lives. Who
even thinks about writing a letter on paper anymore. It's so much easier to bang out an
email, hit the Enter key and it's sent. No envelopes, no stamps no trip to the post
In our email tutorials we're going to cover the basics of
email as well as email acronyms and ways to show your emotions in email. It is our hope
that our email tutorials will enhance your email experience.
Gmail (Google Email)
Google is launching it's own email service called Gmail. For
testing purposes, it's available to only a few thousand invited users. Gmail is only
available at www.gmail.com. There are no plans at this
time to move it to the main Google site.
Google's co-founder and president Larry Page said the idea for Gmail
came from a Google user complaining about the email services offered by Yahoo and MSN.
The big news about Gmail is its' large storage capacity. Gmail
is offering 1 GB of data storage per individual mailbox. That's approximately 500,000 pages
of email. This is 166 times more storage than Yahoo offers with its' free storage and 500
times more than MSN. Yahoo and MSN both offer additional storage for a fee, but Gmail's free
storage is still bigger than what you get for a fee with Yahoo and MSN.
Gmail will have text ads in the margins of individual emails.
Google will scan the messages to determine a theme and then try to offer relevant ads.
Gmail will also include a built in search function that will
allow users to search every email they ever sent and received.
Gmail Privacy Concerns
A group of privacy advocates are drafting a letter asking
Google to clarify its's policy concerning the information Google will glean from scanning
users email. Wayne Rosing, VP of engineering for Google, pointed out that scanning of
user's email is nothing new. If an email provider offers you spam filtering, they're
scanning your email to look for spam, "they have to look at the email in detail or they
can't find the spam. It's nothing extrodinary or new going on here".
Say you don't want to expose your primary email address. Yahoo
allows you to disguise that address using AddressGuard. With AddressGuard you create disposible
addresses. After you create your disposible address, any email sent to that address will be
stored in whatever folder your choose. When that email address starts collecting spam you
simply delete the address. This will have no effect on your primary email address.
